Kaur has sought suspension of the sentence awarded to her by the general court martial till her appeal was heard by the Army headquarters, her family sources said.

The appeal, filed at the army headquarters in Delhi on Saturday, also includes a request for the reduction of the sentence as Kaur has already been exonerated of three main charges by the court martial, they said.]

The court martial had held Capt Poonam Kaur of the Army Service Corps guilty of seven charges including disobedience of lawful command, acts unbecoming of an officer, levelling false accusations and intent to defraud but acquitted her on three of them pertaining to disobience and intent to defraud.

In July 2008, she had levelled allegations of physical and mental harassment against her seniors but a court of inquiry looking into the matter held her ‘blameworthy´ of professional misconduct, including disobedience, improper contact with the media and getting married accommodation wrongfully.
