After the Congress, it is the Samajwadi Party’s turn to be red-faced. On Saturday, when Congress candidate from Saharanpur Iqbal Masood was arrested for his hate speech against Narendra Modi, the police also registered a case against the SP candidate from Uttar Pradesh’s Kairana constituency for his defamatory remarks against the BJP's prime ministerial candidate and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati.

While addressing an election rally in Shamli, Nahid Hasan hinted at Mayawati’s proximity to Modi. “Thrice Mayawati has sat in Modi’s lap and after elections she will do so again. Both are unmarried,” he added.

Nahid is the son of Kairana sitting MP, Tabassum Begum, who won the last election on a BSP ticket. His father, late Munawwar Hasan, used to be a favourite of Mulayam Singh, but later he had joined the BSP.

Nahid fell out with the BSP after the party refused to field him from Kairana and gave the ticket to his uncle Kanwar Hasan instead.

Disapproving of Nahid’s comments, the SP said that everyone should refrain from using such foul language as it was against the spirit of democracy.
