A local court on Monday registered a case against Bharatiya Janshakti President Uma Bharti for allegedly insulting the national flag at a public meeting in Bhopal and asked her to appear before it on February 2.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Ravindra Singh registered the case against the former BJP leader on a petition of Madhya Pradesh Congress General Secretary Deepchand Yadav and State party legal cell President JP Dhanopia, their counsel Rajendra Babbar said in Bhopal.
The case was registered under Section 2 of Prevention of Insult to National Honours Act, 1971, for allegedly insulting the Tricolour in August 2004, he added.
The Congress leaders claimed to have to made futile effort to get the case registered at the TT Nagar police station before moving the court.
Bharti had held the tricolour in the form of a `gamchha' (scarf) at the public meet while undertaking the Tiranga Yatra after quitting as Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Yadav alleged adding "the police succumbed to political pressure and refrained from acting against Bharti."
Dhanopia claimed it was the first case to be registered against a political leader under the Act in Madhya Pradesh.
