Cast away caste

With reference to Chaitanya Kalbag’s article India, a class act (June 14), caste, once a tool in the hands of the upper-castes to divide and exploit Hindu society, is now creating societal problems.

With reference to Chaitanya Kalbag’s article India, a class act (June 14), caste, once a tool in the hands of the upper-castes to divide and exploit Hindu society, is now creating societal problems largely owing to convenient interpretations of certain constitutional provisions. To become a casteless nation, India must strive to improve the lot of the disadvantaged, irrespective of caste. The State must do its bit to provide quality education, healthcare and incentives for inter-caste marriages.
