Blaming the CBI for the manner in which it conducted the Kalaignar TV probe, AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa on Sunday said the agency gave enough scope to DMK leaders, the channel's patrons, to destroy or remove incriminating evidence.
By giving a Delhi court the details of an alleged Rs 214-crore transaction between Cineyug Films Pvt Ltd and Kalaignar TV, the CBI gave early warning to the channel, she alleged.
The pattern of allegations in the case has been that after its mobile phone arm Swan Tele got 2G spectrum at low prices, DB Realty sold stake to Etisalat and made a handsome profit. And the alleged payment to Kalaignar TV by Cineyug Films Pvt Ltd, reportedly funded by DB Realty, is seen as a possible quid pro quo.
In this the role of former telecom minister A Raja, who belongs to the DMK and is now in jail, has become controversial.
In a statement issued here, Jayalalithaa said after the CBI submission in the court, top DMK leaders took part a meeting at the Kalaignar TV office, housed in DMK headquarters.
"The meeting, which reportedly began at 11 pm, went on till 4 am the next day, with all external lights of the building switched off. On February 13, 2011, all critical documents relating to Kalaignar TV were taken away in gunny-sacks to Perungudi Dump Yard and burnt. On February 15, 2001, all bills relating to Kalaignar TV were (torn to shreds) and dumped in corporation bins in different parts of the city (Chennai)," the AIADMK supremo alleged, saying that the "CBI ought to have raided Kalaignar TV and secured all the records before making their suspicions public".
