Brahmeshwar Singh was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Bhojpur district around 28 months ago on June 1, 2012, while on his morning walk. He had been attacked around 4.30 am, not far away from his residence.

“The gunmen are yet to be identified, though we are working on leads. We suspect contract killers had been hired by the murder’s planners to evade detection,” said a CBI source. Mukhiya, incidentally, was targeted a few weeks after his acquittal by the Patna high court in the 1996 Bathani Tola carnage in which 21 Dalits were killed.

The Bihar police’s special investigation team had earlier arrested six suspects in the case, but failed to prove their culpability. The Bihar government had earlier requested the home ministry within weeks of the murder to hand over the case to the CBI.

The agency expressed its inability to take it up its demand as attachment of certain state police officials with the probe was not met. The agency eventually took over the case around 15 months ago, but is yet to make a breakthrough, even as it has also examined the suspected role of certain state-level politicians in the case.
