Since September last year, the CBI has lodged as part of the probe 14 FIRs, of which 13 pertain to the allocations made to private firms. The 14th was to probe alleged irregularities in the allocation of a coal block to a private firm under the government dispensation scheme. “Our probe in at least four FIRs is complete. They are related to irregularities in the allocation of captive coal blocks to ineligible private firms. We are currently finalising the charge sheets,” said a CBI source.

The firms under the CBI’s scanner are accused of having resorted to misrepresentations and concealment of such facts which, if disclosed — in the application, feedback form and the presentation — could have led to their disqualification. Under the laid down procedure, copies of each coal block application were sent to five central ministries (including coal) for vetting while the allocation recommendation was made by the inter-ministerial screening committee.
