In a move aimed at strengthening the law and order situation in the city, Jammu zone inspector general of police (IGP) Rajesh Kumar said that installation of the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system was in the final stage, and very soon the city would be under surveillance.
Speaking on the sidelines of a police-public meet here on Wednesday, Kumar said, "Under the first phase, 35 CCTV cameras will be installed across the city. The second phase would cover the Jammu-Udhampur national highway," adding, "To detect crime and traffic offences, CCTVs will be installed in almost all the major cities of the state."
The IGP said the CCTV cameras were expected to help the police keep a check on traffic violations, trace stolen vehicles, nab the accused of hit-and-run cases and monitor the flow of traffic in the city. He informed the gathering that the police headquarters have been assigned the job of covering all district headquarters under CCTV surveillance.
When asked about the non-functional CCTVs in Jammu and Katra, he said the faulty CCTVs would be repaired soon and directions have been passed to install fresh CCTVs wherever required.
The IGP, in his address, laid stress on community policing and directed the station house officers to hold regular police-public meets in order to solicit feedback and suggestions from the people. He also directed the district police officials to offer time-bound services such as issue of character certificates, service verification certificates etc, to ensure an atmosphere of healthy policing.
