Strongly condemning the killing of a large number of innocent persons by ULFA in Assam, the Centre on Saturday decided to send a high-level team of the Union Home Ministry to the state on Sunday for an on the spot study of the situation.
The team will be led by Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal, an MHA spokesman said.
"The Centre is keeping close watch on the situation arising out of the killing of innocent persons by militants in Assam since Friday," he said.
Stepping up their violence against migrants, ULFA militants on Saturday shot dead 26 people and injured five others in three separate attacks in Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts, a day after gunning down 17 people in the same areas.
Home Minister Shivraj Patil, who convened an emergency meeting to discuss the situation, described the incidents as "an attempt to disturb communal harmony in Assam".
He said the government was always willing to talk to any group in an effort to find peaceful solution to the problems, "but killing of innocent people will not be tolerated".
Expressing the government's commitment to deal with terrorism firmly, he sought full cooperation of the people of Assam in the fight.
