Accusing the Mulayam Singh Yadav government of inaction that led to the murder of at least 17 children in Nithari village, the Centre said on Thursday it was ready for a CBI probe into the ghastly killings if the state government asked for it.
"The law and order in the state is bad. Had the state government acted earlier, lives of so many children would not have been lost," Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal told reporters after visiting Nithari village.
Asked if the government felt the need for a CBI probe into the incident, he said, "If the state government asks for it, the Centre is ready to order a CBI probe."
Jaiswal said there was no politics involved in his visit to Nithari and he was visiting the area as a representative of the Government of India and not as a Congress leader.
"The idea is to put pressure on the state government to ensure the matter is probed with all seriousness," he said.
The Minister held discussions with the local administration and police and also met the aggrieved families.
