Implementation of CAS, which is already in operation in Chennai, would mean that cable TV subscribers would have to receive channels through a set-top box (STB).

This system, also known as addressable system, would enable subscribers to exercise a choice on what channels they want to view, and more importantly, pay for.

The notification was issued by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry, which said it should be in place in the notified areas by December 31 this year.
