Pakistani national Mohammad Idris, who is stranded in India for the last 13 years, will now be kept at the detention cell of Tihar Jail in New Delhi until he is deported to his country.
The Centre has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to send Idris, who was kept in a Kanpur guest house by police in 2009, to the detention cell of Tihar Jail on July 24 until the legal hurdles in sending him to Pakistan is removed, district magistrate MP Agarwal said on Tuesday.
The district police has been asked to trace Idris who is no longer at the guest house to send him to Delhi, the DM said.
Owner of a small manufacturing unit of leather products in Karachi, Idris had come to India in 1999 on a tourist visa to meet his ailing father. However, he was arrested for overstaying the visa tenure of 15 days and was released on bail after six days.
After ten years of legal battle, a local court in 2009 ordered his deportation to Pakistan. The Pakistani officials, however, refused his entry at the Attari border, saying his passport was no more valid and he should be issued a new one.
Idris was then taken to Pakistan high commission for an "Emergency Travel Certificate", but it was of no help. The police then kept him in the guest house here.
Idris was born and brought up in Kanpur's mishri bazaar area and had married a Pakistan national, Shabana, on January 15,1988. Soon after his marriage, he shifted to Karachi and took citizenship of Pakistan.
