Centre to assess damage in Kerala

A Central team is visiting the tsunami-hit coastal areas of Kerala to assess the damage caused by the tidal waves.

A Central team is visiting the tsunami-ravaged coastal areas of Edavanakkad and Puthu Vype, on Wednesday to assess the damage caused by the tidal waves.

The team, led by Deputy Secretary in Ministry of Rural Development, VJ Menon, reached on Tuesday night.

Several houses were destroyed in Edavanakkad and Puthu Vype and five persons killed in Ernakulam district when the tsunami waves hit the Kerala coast on December 26.

Other members of the team are Superintending Engineer in Ministry of Surface Transport, Ekambaran; Deputy Director General in Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, VK Manchander and Assistant Director in Ministry of Environment, V Sreekanth.

The team will leave for Alapuzha district after its visit, official sources said.
