Jim Balsillie, the company's co-CEO, says the company is continuing discussions with governments and service providers in those countries. He says "they believe we have made good progress in those discussions."

Those countries have threatened to ban some BlackBerry services. He added, "I'm optimistic that a positive and constructive outcome can be achieved."

He made the remarks during a conference call as Research in Motion Ltd announced that second-quarter earnings jumped 68 per cent as it added new BlackBerry subscribers and beat analysts expectations at a time when many have started to write the company off.
