Union minister of state for minority affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi presented the or ceremonial cloth inscribed with religious verses at the mausoleum.

Modi congratulated pilgrims attending the 803rd annual urs of the saint and said in a message: "From time immemorial India has remained the land of rishi-munis and saints. Ajmer shrine of Khwaja Garib Nawaz has always spread a massage of communal harmony and brotherhood in the entire country. His teachings are relevant even today and are guiding the lives of people of this country."

Modi had earlier handed over the chadar to Naqvi in Delhi.

On Tuesday, a chadar was offered at the dargah on behalf of former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpyee by his personal secretary Shiv Kumar Sharma.

Naqvi refused to comment on the row over Surya Namaskar being made compulsory in schools across Rajasthan despite opposition from the Muslim community. He said, "Today is no time to comment on political issues. I'm here to pay tribute to Garib Nawaz."
