Sonika Sharma, daughter-in-law of a retired police officer, is scared that she has planned to shift her residence from Lajpat Nagar in Ghaziabad to some other location. Sonika survived a life-threatening incident recently when two armed men tried to snatch her gold chain.

“It was really a frightening experience when the robbers hit me and tried to snatch my necklace. The incident happened when I was driving my car. We are now planning to shift to some other location,” she said.
Sonika’s is not the only case in the city. The city has witnessed a sudden spurt in snatching incidents over the past week. Criminals are striking at will at any time of a day.
According to the police, most chain-snatching offenders operate alone or in two-member groups and usually use stolen bikes. Over the past few weeks, the police have increased checking of motorcycles.
With police officials admitting a dismal 50 per cent workout of chain-snatching cases, snatchers on bikes and armed with country-made pistols have posed a serious challenge to them. The city police say that in the incident of chain snatchings, once the robbers vanish – speeding away on motorcycles – it is very hard to crack the case.
The worst-hit areas include Indirapuram, Kaushambi, Vaishali, Sahibabad and Kavi Nagar. According to RWAs, about 6-7 cases of chain snatching have been witnessed in Vaishali area alone.
