Change Punjab leadership, Congmen to Rahul

The Congressmen in Jalandhar want a change in the party's state leadership. On Friday, they took their demand to Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, who was on a day's visit to the city. Jasdeep Singh Malhotra reports.

The Congressmen in Jalandhar want a change in the party's state leadership. On Friday, they took their demand to Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, who was on a day's visit to the city.

Gandhi had come to meet the workers. It was necessary, given the flagging spirits in the wake of the party's debacle in the assembly polls.

Many reasons had been cited for the loss - the Dalit voters' shift towards the BSP, the bungling in distribution of tickets, a failure to persuade the rebels, overconfidence and factionalism.

But the partymen trained guns on their leaders. Besides state Congress chief Amarinder Singh, his predecessor Mohinder Singh Kaypee and former minister Chaudhary Jagjit Singh came under fire as well.

No state-level leader was present at the key interactive sessions at the Karwal Palace - a mansion on the outskirts of the city owned by Akali leader Darshan Singh Karwal - which had left the workers free to air their grievances.
