He was delivering a lecture on ‘Changing Orientation to Change’ in the social science faculty at Banaras Hindu University here on Tuesday. The social work unit of sociology department organised the lecture.

Prof Atal, also member of Indian Council of Social Science Research and National Institute of Health and Family Planning, said changes should be made in such a way that they not only serve the present but also be relevant for the future.

He said changes should not be made on local or national perspective but they should have a global approach. He said India was adopting the American model to achieve the desired development. “But the Indian model of development can never match the American model due to its different geographical, social and cultural atmosphere”, he added. Prof Atal said the need of the hour was to ensure a development process that could not only meet today’s requirement of common people but also be useful in future. Former Dean of social science faculty Prof SK Srivastava was the guest of honour on the occasion.
