Dr Amit was presented before Additional District Judge (fast track court) Phool Chand Jhajharia, who remanded him in judicial custody.

“Charges will be framed against him in three cases of kidney trafficking during the next hearing on March 26,” Additional Public Prosecutor KK Bhatnagar said.

In a related development, the local police moved an application in the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate to take Dr Amit in police custody.

The plea was moved in response to a complaint lodged by three persons against Dr Amit in 1995, levelling kidney trafficking charges against him. He was declared a fugitive by the city police at that time. The court will give a ruling on the plea on Tuesday.

A team of local police officials had gone to Ambala last week and submitted a production warrant to the Central Bureau of Investigation to take the kingpin in custody. The CBI had handed over Dr Amit to Jaipur police officials, who brought him here on Monday under tight security.
