I am an Arts graduate. I undertook a personal secretary course at Davar's College in Mumbai. I am in a dilemma over my further studies. This year I will join a PG course in English Literature at Pune. I plan to do M.Phil. But, at present, I want to do some additional management degree course as well, which can help me get a good job. But I don’t know what course should I opt for. Please help me out by giving some suggestions.

You must be focused as to which career you wish to pursue. Do you know what you want to do after completing post graduation in English Literature?
As you have done a secretarial course, you can apply for a job as a personal secretary or in the area of office management or data processing. If you like English you can take up a course in mass communication or journalism. You can even consider a course in travel and tourism if you are interested in travel and have good social skills.

How is multimedia related to advertising? I want to get into the advertising field. Please tell how should I prepare for the entrance exams. — ANONYMOUS

Multimedia is used to develop ad films and promotional material. If you are good at graphic designing and multi-media, you can apply to an ad agency as a visualiser. You should also compile any multi-media or design work that you have done. You can also apply for a job in video-editing studios, or with ad film companies.

Each library will probably have its own software. Therefore, a basic knowledge of programming would be useful so that you know how to handle the data.

I am a doctor working at a government institute. I want to know about the Biotechnology industry and its scope in my field? I am quire well versed with computer. Please, guide me.

As a doctor you can certainly look at a career in biotechnology. In fact, with an MD in Medicine you can apply to any biotech firm, research laboratory, or chemical company. At present, biotechnology is, indeed, among the fastest growing employment sectors in India. However, you might want to do a specialised course in the area of research you wish to pursue. Genetics could be one of them. As you are good in computers, you can also consider bio-informatics. It involves handling the enormous amount of information about the nature and structure of the billions of genes through the use of information technology.

Prominent universities where you can pursue M.Sc. in Biotechnology include IIT, Mumbai; Jawaharlal Nehru Uinversity, New Delhi; Benaras Hindu University, Varanasi; GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar (UP); and Anna University, You can apply for M.Sc. in Genetics at DU, Chaudhary Charan Singh, Haryana Agricultural University, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. Besides, the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology, Bangalore, offers a PG diploma in bio-informatics. .
