The workers, hailing from Benaika village in Bilaspur district, have been kept captive at a brick kiln in Chhapra district's Rajbangra village by contractors for the last few days, they said.

Chief minister Raman Singh has asked the Bilaspur collector to take necessary steps to free the labourers, most of them belonging to the Scheduled Castes, the officials said.

Families members of these victims, some of them children, met the chief minister on Thursday.

Bilaspur Collector Sonmani Vora said a team of district officials will soon be sent to Chhapra to seek their safe release.
