The protestors spilled over on to the streets at around 10 am and held up traffic at the Chhawni intersection demanding immediate clean up of the drains and action against the errant restaurant owners.

The residents held up traffic for over two hours and relented only when local MLA Mahendra Hardia assured that he would personally ensure that the drains were cleaned immediately.

Earlier, the protestors charged that the practice of dumping rotting food by Gokul and Jain bhojnalayaas in the area led to the drains becoming perpetually clogged.

“The drains continuously emit a foul stench making it difficult to breathe and also pose a health hazard,” declared local resident Satyanarayan Garg. Repeated complaints to the IMC Health Department to look into the matter went unheeded, he added.

“After we threatened to launch an agitation the IMC finally poured a few tankers of water in the drain in a bid to flush out the leftovers. But it failed to have any impact,” he said.

When contacted Assistant Health Officer, IMC, Dr Natwar Sarda claimed ignorance about the protest. “We have not received any complaint so far about dumping of leftovers. If the matter reaches us strict action will be taken against the offenders,” he assured.
