The police arrested bilal Ahmed Khan, an alleged member of the Chhota Shakeel gang, from the Kasaiwada area of suburban Kurla, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria said.

"He is alleged to have plotted to kill a politician and attempted to extort money from a businessman in Uttar Pradesh due to which a case has been registered against him there," Maria said.

A team from the Uttar Pradesh ATS and Mumbai police arrested Khan on the basis of information received, he said.

Khan was allegedly one of the persons who had shot at former mayor Milind Vaidya in December 1998.

Vaidya, who was affiliated with the Shiv Sena party, was attacked at his residence in Mahim. Gunmen had fired indiscriminately at his residence killing three persons and injuring him.

He allegedly robbed a house in Naupada in 2000, impersonating an Income Tax officer. Crime Branch also booked him in a case for possession of live cartridges.

Khan, a resident of Mumbra in Thane was allegedly out on bail since 2003.

He was produced before a magistrate's court, which granted transit remand to the Uttar Pradesh police.
