China on Tuesday assured Myanmar that it would not interfere in its internal affairs but said the cross-border drug trafficking has caused "tremendous havoc" in the country and called for signing an anti-narcotics agreement at an early date.
"The flood of drugs at the border area between China and Myanmar has exerted tremendous havoc on local society and people's health. High attention should be given to it and severe measures should be taken to check it," Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said during a meeting with his Myanmar counterpart Soe Win, who is on a five-day official visit to China.
Wen said that China hopes to step up bilateral and multilateral cooperation with Myanmar and sign an anti-narcotics agreement at an early date, the official Xinhua news agency reported.
Responding to Soe Win's introduction on the domestic situation, Wen stressed that Myanmar's internal affairs should be solved by its government and people.
"As Myanmar is a neighbouring country, China sincerely hopes that Myanmar could continue to push forward reconciliation at home and realise economic development and social progress," Wen said.
Wen's remark is seen as a clear sign that Beijing would not join other countries in demanding the Myanmareese military junta to seek the release of detailed opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi and restoration of a representative government in Yangon.
