A newspaper editor at a Chinese newspaper succumbed to his injuries on Monday after being severely beaten by the police about three months ago.
"He died on February 2 due to multiple injuries," said a former colleague of Wu Xianghu, who was the deputy editor at the Taizhou Wanbao newspaper in east China's Zhejiang province.
"Our newspaper might take action," said the journalist on condition on anonymity. "We're all really angry about it."
Up to 50 police personnel had raided the newspaper's office on October 20, a day after it published an article criticising traffic police over charging arbitrary fees for electrical bicycle licences.
Wu was kicked and beaten, before being hurled out of his office and being bundled into a police car.
He had had a liver transplant two years ago and the beating had caused severe damage to his liver.
Another journalist at Taizhou Wanbao, who also declined to be named, said Wu had remained in hospital following the beatings on October 20. He added that newspaper staff had been warned against discussing the incident with outsiders.
