Chouhan wants 6 more districts under NREGS

REALISING THE importance of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) and significant contribution being made by the scheme in removing existing regional imbalances, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has requested the Union Ministry of Rural Development to induct six more districts in the scheme from the next fiscal.

This Government of India scheme has comes as a boon for the backward districts of Madhya Pradesh, as these districts received Rs 1285 crore till October 2006 and the State is expecting to get another Rs 1000 crore during the current fiscal.

Due to the huge inflow of funds not only developmental activities have gained momentum in these districts but lakhs of jobless people are also getting employment.

With the induction of six more districts, each of the selected district would get Rs 40 to 50 crore per year, the amount that is sufficient enough to change the face of these districts. At present 18 districts of the State are covered under the scheme and till October.

Looking to the benefits associated with NREGS, the Chief Minister requested the Union Government to induct six more districts under the scheme.

Talking to Hindustan Times they hinted that the names of tribal-dominated backward districts might be inducted in next phase. Districts that are likely to be inducted in the next phase are Anupur, Burhanpur, Panna, Rajgarh, Chhindwara and Damoh.

They further revealed that the State Government is expecting that all remaining districts of Madhya Pradesh would be covered under the scheme in the next four-five years.
