Born in Devon, reared in Bristol and an England A tourist before he had played a first-class game, The Nottinghamshire wicketkeeper is the leading candidate to become England's long-term replacement for Alec Stewart behind the stumps.

He played nine one-day internationals in 1999/2000 but has improved his batting since then after a spell working with National Academy coach Rod Marsh during the winter. Read was born in Devon and began his career at Gloucestershire but moved due to the presence of Jack Russell in the first team.
