The Indian subsidiary of the US-based global networking products firm, however, did not assign any reasons for Salgame's resignation. Salgame was also not reachable.

"David Caspari, vice-president of service provider operations, Asia Pacific, will replace Salgame as acting president of Cisco India till a permanent replacement is found," a company statement said.

Caspari will report to Owen Chan, Cisco's president for Asia Pacific operations.

"Salgame has been instrumental in the growth and development of our business in India. Over the last three years, he has built a strong, customer-focused leadership team," the statement said.

Under Salgame's leadership, Cisco witnessed unprecedented growth and gains in market share in India.

The Indian networking market has grown rapidly in the recent years, fuelled by liberalisation, market reforms and telecom de-regulation.

In October, the company had announced it would invest about $1.1 billion in India over a three-year period in recognition of the country's rapid development both as a market and a centre of research and development.
