Clean village awards instituted

AS PART of the efforts to ensure proper cleanliness in villages the State Government has instituted State-level and district-level Clean Village Awards in the State under the Total Sanitation Campaign.

The award has been divided into three categories at both the levels. At district-level, first prize of Rs 5 lakh would be given to the Village Water and Sanitation Committee of the cleanest village. The second prize would comprise Rs 3 lakh and third prize would be of Rs 2 lakh.

Similarly, at the district-level first, second and third prizes of Rs 2 lakh, Rs 1 lakh and Rs 50,000 respectively would be given to the Village Water and Sanitation Committees for excellent performance under the sanitation programme. The norms laid down for the awards include cent per cent clean family latrines, toilets and drinking water facility in cent per cent anganwadis and schools, use and maintenance of cent per cent latrines, creation of clean atmosphere following abolition of open air latrines, proper drainage system, disposal of solid wastes and regular meetings of the Village Health Committees.

The districts may give district-level and village-level awards as per local circumstances conforming to the guidelines set in this regard. The district-level health committee headed by the collector would do this.

For every State-level award, each district would be required to nominate two Village Water and Sanitation Committees and intimate the State Water and Sanitation Mission in this regard.The awards would be given on the basis of works carried out up to August 15, 2006.
