Bhrama Singh, 50, a resident of Shiv Colony, Ballabgarh, suffered an epileptic fit as he was stepping out of the bathroom, a few meters away from his house, at 10pm on Sunday. As he collapsed, Singh hit the tap attached to a water tank. According to relatives who were present at the time of incident, the tap pierced his neck and came out of his mouth.

"His neck was hanging from the tap," said Rashma Singh, his sister-in-law.

Soon, neighbours got together and with the help of a metal cutter cut a portion of the pipe, separating Singh from the tank. Singh was then rushed to the Sarvodaya Hospital and Research Centre in Sector 8, where a team of doctors led by medical director, Dr Rakesh Gupta, performed the surgery that went on till 3 am on Monday.

"The patient is recovering in the Intensive care unit. His condition is stable," he added.

Dr Gupta said that Singh's windpipe and foodpipe had been damaged in the accident, but would heal with time.

The surgery costing more than a lakh was performed for free, as Singh was from an economically weak background.

"The doctors took it as a challenge and money wasn't an issue," said Sandeep Kumar, an administrative official at the hospital.
