"The chief minister did telephone me three-four days back to express his condolences and assured of an impartial probe into the incident," Prem, the widow of Professor Sabharwal, told.

"I told the chief minister to punish the culprits as Professor Sabharwal was a very dignified man and nobody had ever touched him except on that fateful day," she said while trying to control her emotions.

Sabharwal, along with his two colleagues—who were supervising elections—was mobbed by unruly students during the student union elections at Madhav College in Ujjain on August 26. A post-mortem report said that Sabharwal's two ribs were broken and lungs bled, causing his death.

On September 5, at a protest meeting, Congress leaders have criticised Chouhan for not showing "any decency" to call on the bereaved family.
