He has asked the Madhya Pradesh Housing Board (MPHB) to prepare a comprehensive blueprint with the help of consultants. The ambitious project would be developed on an alternative model rather than by a principal developer, as a minister wanted.

In a couple of years, the area dotted with dilapidated and demolished government quarters would be converted into a modern happening place having shopping malls, housing complexes and offices.

Work on the re-densification project had been stalled about two years ago. According to sources, a minister had been lobbying for a Delhi-based builder as the principal developer.

Some rounds of discussions were also held in this regard. In the meanwhile, Income Tax Department sleuths trapped two employees of the group last year at Bhopal airport carrying Rs 50 lakh.

“The Chief Minister clearly directed that instead of giving the project to a principal developer, an alternative model should be developed by MPHB for Bhopal,” said a senior officer requesting anonymity.

After Bhopal, re-densification projects would also be undertaken in Indore, Jabalpur and Gwalior. Under this scheme, government-occupied buildings and institutions in the prime localities or places of business importance would be developed into residential and commercial complexes.
