The impact of climate change in the Himalayan region will be high on the agenda when the chief ministers of three northern states, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh meet in Shimla on Thursday during a conference.
The two-day conference, starting October 29 here, would be attended by the chief ministers of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttrakhand, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, besides senior officers, technocrats, research scholars and NGOs, Additional chief secretary (Environment) Sarojni Ganju Thakur told reporters today.
Union minister of state for Environment and Forest (Independent charge), Jairam Ramesh, will also be present during the conclave on Indian Himalayas, she added.
The CMs conclave, being organised by HP government, would go through the experts recommendations for formulating action plan, Thakur said.
There is growing evidence that in the higher altitudes the major Himalayan glaciers, the main source of water for several perennial rivers in the north India, are receding fast, she said.
Environment degradation has rendered adverse impact on the flora and fauna in Himalayan regions too, she added.
On the initiatives taken by the HP government, she said the state government was drawing up an environment master plan for every district having different climatic condition.
