COLD WAVE conditions claimed four more lives in the district on Sunday as the mercury fell by a few degrees. Dense fog enveloped the city, delaying trains and roadways buses. Cases of cold dysentery, cough, fever and abdominal pain were reported in a few localities.

The minimum temperature was recorded at 7.2 degrees Celsius.
Two of those who died on Saturday night were Ram Lal Kevat, resident of Jauhar village under Gulharia police station, and Chaturbhuj Sharma, resident of Devipur village under Chiluatal police station. But these deaths failed to move the district administration to take notice of the plight of people.
Though the Municipal Corporation made arrangements for bonfires at 30 places in the city, it was clearly not enough. Most of the bonfires came handy for policemen patrolling localities at night.
The poor failed to benefit from bonfire arrangements at the railway station, the bus station, the district hospital crossing, the Reti crossing and the Ghosh Company.
Dense fog affected plying of buses and movement of trains. According to sources, the 4048 Satyagraha Express and the 4076 Shaheed Express were running eight hours late. The 5707 Amrapali Express, the 3019 Avadh Express and the 5089 Sikandarabad Express were also running late.
Non-government organisations also failed to take the initiative to provide help to the poor. Meanwhile, cold wave affected the pulse polio drive in the city on Sunday. Poor turnout was witnessed at booths in the district.
