As newcomers throng colleges with the start of the new academic session, colleges in Gurgaon have taken some stern measures to prevent ragging of students by their seniors.
Colleges have formed anti-ragging committees to check the practice on campuses while the city police have also rolled up their sleeves to curb the menace. Though ragging is banned, the city colleges have witnessed many incidents in which students were ragged by their seniors. In 2009, an engineering student was hospitalized after being injured during ragging.
In 2010, the Supreme Court had asked all the district administrations to set up an anti-ragging committee to keep a tab on those involved in ragging. The apex court also directed all educational institutions to have a separate committee to curb ragging.
At Dronacharya Government College, a committee of 12 teachers will closely monitor the activities of students on the campus to "make sure that freshers are not harassed,” said SS Bhoken, principal.
At the Government College, Sector 14, anti-ragging posters have been pasted at various places as part of an awareness drive for the young students and teachers have been instructed to keep a tab on rogue senior students.
Meanwhile, the police have also taken some measures to prevent ragging.
"We have formed a committee at the district level in which head of all academic institutions, media representatives and non-government organization are members. They would help us in keeping a tab on ragging," said additional deputy commissioner K Makrand Pandu Rang.

{{/usCountry}}However, a round-the-clock helpline service launched by the police is not working. The ADC said, “I will get it checked and if the number is not working we will get it changed.”
