Committed to fast disposal of cases

At A time when pendency of cases has become a major cause of concern for judiciary in courts of law, Justice (retired) U C Srivastava had attained rare distinction as one of the judges in the country for fast disposal of cases. His commitment for the cause (fast disposal) was such that there was a representation from Mumbai saying, ?Don't make him sit for long, otherwise we won't have work.?

His commitment for the cause (fast disposal) was such that there was a representation from Mumbai saying, “Don't make him sit for long, otherwise we won't have work.”

The representation was made when he was serving as a judge of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT). Not only this. Perhaps, during his days as a lawyer, the workaholic Srivastava, then had handled 65 per cent of the civil and revenue cases.

“Initially I refused to take up the charge as a judge as I had enough work in my hand as a lawyer,” he said. But, perhaps, the challenge to disposal of cases made him to take the new assignment in about 1988-89.

Being a bachelor, Justice Srivastava has devoted himself to Law.
He taught free of cost for three years at the Judicial Training Research Institute. “Just I felt that I had been given the noble task of teaching, so I took up the work free of cost,” he added. Despite age catching up with him, Justice Srivastava has kept himself busy by meeting the academic ends of the youngsters. “I have been giving free consultation to the youngsters,” he said.
