Apropos of the editorial, It's an Indian army (February 15), we would like to reiterate that the Sachar Committee had categorically denied allegations that any specific questions were asked from any wing of the defence forces on actions taken by them in the past. The same had also been reported in HT on February 14. Thus, the unfortunate inclusion of the allegation in the editorial was wrong.

The move to conduct a census to ascertain the number of Muslims in the armed forces is truly an attempt to communalise the defence sector. An Indian soldier fights for his country — he is not defined by his religion. It is bizarre that the grave repercussions of this 'project' had not been foreseen by the powers that be.

The BJP has acted responsibly in supporting the government's stand on Iran's nuclear plans (BJP backs govt on Iran, February 15). Our country is in greater danger of being bombed than either the US or any other Western country.

Online registers
It is good that the Supreme Court has asked the government to make registration of marriages compulsory. It must be ensured that this law is made to apply to all Indians, irrespective of religion.
Divorces should also be registered and an amended certificate issued. In fact, the legislature should attempt to introduce a system whereby registration of marriages and divorces can be done online. This will facilitate the process and encourage more people to engage in the legality.

Freedom from justice
This refers to Hannah's parents seek PM's intervention (February 15). I was shocked to read that 18 months after his arrest, Hannah Foster's murderer, Maninder Pal Singh Kohli, has yet to be punished.
In India, relatives of those accused, the police, the lawyers and the courts are brokers who help criminals dodge justice.

State must pitch in
Apropos to No consensus on State funding of elections (February 16), it is unfortunate that some major political parties have not decided whether or not there should be State funding of elections. To avoid corruption, it is necessary for the State to fund elections. The expenditure can be shared by the Centre with the states.
