JUST A day before the festival of Eid-Ul-Azha, communal tension once again gripped the handloom city Mau on Tuesday. There were clashes and incidents of stone pelting between the members of two communities over a minor dispute.
The DIG for Azamgar range Rajendra Pal Singh rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation. Around a dozen persons of both communities were injured.
Police resorted to lathicharge and arrested 22 persons. A red alert has been sounded in the district in the wake of festival Wednesday.
Markets remained closed soon after violence broke out. A heavy force has been deployed in the city.
According to information, half a dozen labourers were unloading wood from a tractor in Pyarepura locality at around 12.00 noon. Meanwhile, a youth riding a cycle collided with a labourer. When, the labourer scolded the youth, he along with his friends beat him up. Soon, members of both communities took to the road and a vegetable vendor was also beaten up by an irate mob. It triggered further tension in the area and members of both communities in a large number started pelting stone on each other, causing injury to a dozen of persons. A locality was also attacked in the ensuing violence.
District magistrate Mukesh Meshram said the situation was fully under control and security had been beefed up in the entire city. Soon after the incident, principals of primary schools started sending the students to their houses by closing the institutions. Parents had also thronged the schools in large number to take their kids home.
