Communal flare-up in Mau

JUST A day before the festival of Eid-Ul-Azha, communal tension once again gripped the handloom city Mau on Tuesday. There were clashes and incidents of stone pelting between the members of two communities over a minor dispute.

The DIG for Azamgar range Rajendra Pal Singh rushed to the spot and took stock of the situation. Around a dozen persons of both communities were injured.

Police resorted to lathicharge and arrested 22 persons. A red alert has been sounded in the district in the wake of festival Wednesday.

Markets remained closed soon after violence broke out. A heavy force has been deployed in the city.

According to information, half a dozen labourers were unloading wood from a tractor in Pyarepura locality at around 12.00 noon. Meanwhile, a youth riding a cycle collided with a labourer. When, the labourer scolded the youth, he along with his friends beat him up. Soon, members of both communities took to the road and a vegetable vendor was also beaten up by an irate mob. It triggered further tension in the area and members of both communities in a large number started pelting stone on each other, causing injury to a dozen of persons. A locality was also attacked in the ensuing violence.
