DESPITE THE untimely and traumatic death of his only son, Mohammad Chunna, the father of Meraj, dissuaded the mob from resorting to any violence. The frail but bold septuagenarian reposed his complete faith in the district administration.“Let the administration take appropriate action against the culprits,” was Chunna’s curt instruction to the agitated crowd.

With tears in his eyes, Meraj’s father requested the officials to nab the accused so that others did not have to suffer like him.

Chunna, who is too frail and old to earn a livelihood, lost his family’s sole bread earner to mindless violence. Now, the old man will have to fend for himself and three unmarried daughters.

Compensation for the family

THE STATE Government has announced a compensation of Rs five lakh to the family of Meraj. Surendra Mohan Agarwal, Finance and Taxation advisor to the CM, said the government had released the money and it would be handed over to the victim’s family soon. Agarwal also took responsibility for the marriage of Meraj’s sister. The SP leader said, “The problem of Meraj’s family are also our problems”. Agarwal said he would also try to get a government job for one of the three sisters of Meraj.
