Defending his six Cabinet colleagues against charges of "looting and extorting" Public Sector Undertakings, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Sunday accused the Congress of eroding the prestige of democracy by making "baseless allegations" and said they should not be voted to power.

In an apparent attack on the Congress, Vajpayee told a rally in Jodhpur that the prestige of democracy was being eroded by such baseless allegations and appealed to people to "prevent such elements from coming to power".

"I have talked to the central Vigilance Commissioner and Cabinet Secretary who have said that the allegations were not correct", he said.

He said the ministers have the right to approach courts and file defamation suits.
