“This would not have happened if the Congress had agreed to field its candidates. But nobody paid attention to my recommendations. We are seeing the fallout now,” Rao Inderjit Singh.

Rumours in political circles hint that the election was postponed after the Congress could not bring a majority of the councillors ‘on board’ and the party needed time to ‘round up the flock’.

Councillor’s lawyer to approach HC
Ward No. 30 councillor Nisha Singh said she will approach the Punjab and Haryana high court on Monday to challenge the district court’s order, which upheld the government’s notification of holding the election on June 21. She met her lawyer on Saturday, who will challenge the district court's verdict in the vacation Bench of the high court.

Some councillors not affiliated to Congress also suspect the election may be postponed again. “The ruling party is wary of having a mayor from other party. That is why they postponed the election. They may do it again,” said Poonam of ward No. 28.

Congress sources, however, said the election won't be delayed further. They called Nisha Singh's move “foolhardy”.

“What is the point in approaching the high court on Monday when election is scheduled for Tuesday? One can't advance the election any further,” said a Congress source involved in district-level operations.

The source said the Congress' choice of mayor has been selected. The candidate was handpicked by Rao Inderjit Singh, added the source.

In the recently-held elections for the post of councillors of the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG), many independent candidates had emerged winners.

Over the years the MCG has come under criticism from the public for not maintaining the Millennium City properly, and after the MCG poll, residents expected things to improve.
