Accusing Congress and CPI(M) of making contradictory statements on the formation of a coalition government at the Centre, BJP leader Ananth Kumar said these parties were "betraying" people by following the "politics of opportunism".

"Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi wanted CPI-M's ouster for all round progress and restoration of democracy in West Bengal while Marxist leader Jyoti Basu's statement that his party was hoping and working for a Congress-led secular Government at the Centre is an instance of these parties resorting to political opportunism," the former Union Minister said.
With some senior Left leaders favouring formation of a third front led by Left parties, Basu owed an explanation to his party's central leadership for offering support for a Congress-led Government at the Centre, Ananth Kumar, who is also Karnataka BJP President, told a press conference here.
Following exit poll predictions, leaders of many parties have started staking their claim for Prime Ministership, but it was not the case of BJP which had projected Atal Bihari Vajpayee as its undisputed leader, he said.
Kumar said Left parties owed an explanation to the people for "neglecting" development projects when Deve Gowda and IK Gujral were the Prime Ministers with the outside support of those parties.
