Alam is tipped to be the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) candidate from Sultana’s constituency, Malerkotla.

She has requested the Punjab government to beef up Alam’s security in view of the “imminent threat” to his life from Sikh hardliners and fundamental forces.

Sources in the Punjab intelligence wing confirmed that Alam was a target of hardliners, because of which he was covered under the high-security category. “About eight months ago, we had captured a militant who had revealed that Alam was on the hit list,” a senior official of the intelligence wing said.

The SAD has appointed Alam the party’s area-in-charge in Malerkotla. In a communication to DGP Anil Kaushik, the two-time MLA stated due to Alam’s controversial tenure in Punjab during the days of terrorism and also while on deputation in the militancy-infested Jammu and Kashmir, he had been on the hit list of Sikh hardliners.
