Desecration Issue
MEMBERS OF the Inquiry Committee, formed by the Congress to probe the desecration of the Ambedkar statues in Kanpur and Allahabad, visited the Allahabad University (AU) on Thursday.
The committee headed by AP Gautam, former MP and Chairman of Congress Scheduled Caste Cell, gave a clean chit to the AU.
It is noteworthy that demonstrations and intense protests were held by Dalits following desecration of Dr Ambedkar statue at the AU’s Law faculty on December 6. The AU administration immediately reinstalled a new white marble statue of Dr Ambedkar.
Talking to mediapersons, Gautam said Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Salmaan Khursheed had formed the committee to probe the incidents and present a report of its findings. He said that the committee, in its preliminary investigation, found proper security arrangements in the AU and said the university was not responsible for the incident. He said the incident might be a deliberate attempt by some political parties to disturb the social balance for political mileage.
Gautam said that it was a matter of concern for the district administration to protect the statues of national leaders. He said they would seek explanation from district administration and know the status of the action taken by them on the incident. He alleged that the government was not serious over the incidents and a CBI inquiry was needed to trace the culprits. He said that they would meet the Governor demanding proper action over the incidents. He said Dr Ambedkar worked for the betterment of Dalits and socially weaker sections of the society and they would not entertain any act of dishonouring thsi great leader.

{{/usCountry}}Congress leaders including Sangam Lal Shilpkar, SD Lal, ex-MLA Purushottam Lal said the incident was a plot by the ruling party to disturb social harmony to get political advantage in the forthcoming State Assembly elections. They demanded CBI inquiry into the incidents. A large number of Congress activists and youth leaders were present including Abhishek Shukla, Brijendra Mishra, Kripa Shankar Upadhyay, Alok Pandey, Ramji Pandey, Ashish Pandey, Pramod Tripathi, Vinod Dubey, Imtiaz Ahmed, Dinesh Chandra and Nagendra Mohan Mishra.
