The Congress demanded a CBI probe into the fake encounters killings in Gujarat and wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Home Minister Shivraj Patil on Tuesday, expressing fears that the state government may liquidate DG Vanzara, the suspended police official.
The party alleged that the Modi regime would blame a muslim for this killing in order to foment communal riots and polarise the state before the year-end assembly polls.
"There is widespread apprehension that a senior DIG officer may be killed on one pretext or the other and BJP functionaries, including the Chief Minister, would organise things in such a way that people believe that a Muslim is to be blamed for it,’ said Madhusudan Mistry, chief whip of the Congress parliamentary party, in his letter. Mistry is a Congress MP from Gujarat.
In highlighting the contents of Mistry’s letter - which were based on the Vanzara’s brother’s apprehensions - the Congress associated itself with the allegations and the plea that the Centre take "all steps to nullify the design" if the state government.
"This is a classic case where the Centre is entitled to use all its powers to aid, advise, suggest or persuade the state government to ensure that Vanzara is not liquidated," said Abhishek Singhvi, party spokesman.

{{/usCountry}}Reacting to queries, Singhvi said that the Congress was not demanding central rule because Article 356 is not the solution to every problem and it tended to digress the issue and create sympathy (for Modi). "We have to get the government to give advisories," he said. The moot point, he underlined, was not Vanzara’s fate; it was to ensure that he was not liquidated but punished for his crimes.
