CONGRESS ACTIVISTS were caned by CISF and police at the Indore airport when they tried to enter the premises to welcome National Youth Congress president Ashok Tanwar on Wednesday.

Several leaders and their supporters had gathered at Ahilya Bai Airport in a show of strength to impress Tanwar, who was arriving in the City to take part in the Jan Chetna Rally being organised by the Congress to highlight failures of the BJP-led State Government.
The trouble started when some Congressmen tried to enter the airport premises chanting slogans and carrying flags and banners when Tanwar landed at the airport. CISF and police prevented them from entering and then caned them as they persisted in surging ahead.
Nasir Khan, Anup Shukla, Mukesh Chaurasia and Mukesh Yadav and several others received slight injuries in the cane charge. While the caning was going on senior leaders including City Congress president Pramod Tandon, Mrinal Pant and Rajyavardhansingh Dattigaon among others were also present.
After being beaten up the Congressmen raised slogans against policemen and demanded action against them. However, Pramod Tandon came up to the Congressmen in a bid to pacify them. Later, he said that over-enthusiasm of the Congressmen led to the situation.
Meanwhile, after the disruption, Tanwar was given a rousing reception in true Congress style – with loud drum beating, slogan shouting, and attempts to shake Tanwar’s hand and if possible lift him onto the shoulders. In the process, senior Congress leaders were crushed and had a tough time extricating themselves from the melee and guiding Tanwar to his car.
