LOCAL CONGRESS workers are unhappy with the nomination of Harishchandra Singh as the new district president. He replaces Satish Chobey. The nomination was part of the reshuffle that the high command effected in district units.
Varanasi is considered to be a Congress bastion since the time of Kamlapati Tripathi, who was a trusted lieutenant of the then Prime minister Indira Gandhi.
Interestingly, the nomination stunned the Congress workers and even leaders since nobody in the party circles knew Singh before his appointment as new district president. A retired teacher, Harishchandra Singh’s only qualification for his appointment is that his name was forwarded by the local MP Rajesh Mishra who does not see eye to eye with Satish Chobey, the outgoing president.
Satish Chobey and Rajesh Mishra have been on collision course since MP’s outbursts against State president Salman Khushid. Chobey had demanded action against the MP and the other side had levelled accusations against the district president.
“The change for strengthening the party is welcome. But a change for satisfying the ego of the MP will prove disastrous for the party,” outgoing district Congress president Satish Chobey said, adding, that it was tragedy for the party that a person whom nobody knew, not even the Congressmen, has been installed as district Congress president.

{{/usCountry}}However, the Congress MP is celebrating the new nomination. The celebration seems more for dislodging the previous president who is close to the Kamlapati Tripathi family.
The situation is worse in Chandauli district. The new incumbent Rajesh Chaudhary is not well known and does not have command of the grassroots cadre than Bhagwan Tiwari, who held the post since 1997, did.
