"Even the registered beneficiaries of the scheme are being deprived of jobs ... The funds allotted towards ensuring their employment are being clandestinely and fraudulently withdrawn by people in nexus with officials," Bihar Pradesh Congress committee president Anil Sharma told reporters.

"It will be proper if the Centre appoints a separate agency to probe the loot, irregularities and corruption in execution of the NREGA in Bihar," Sharma said.

Alleging a "scam running into hundreds of crores of rupees in the NREGA in Bihar", Sharma claimed an inquiry would not only uncover officials involved "but also expose the people at the top and prove their connivance".

He also called for an inquiry by an independent agency into alleged misuse and non-utilisation of funds in the state under other Centrally sponsored schemes.
