Now that candidates for most of the seats have been announced, both the Congress and BJP in Madhya Pradesh are facing protests and rebellions from those who have been left out, forcing party leaders to chalk out strategies to defuse the situation.
On Thursday, Congress workers from Silwani constituency in Raisen district damaged the door of MP Congress president Kantilal Bhuria’s chamber in the state Congress office. They were protesting the candidature of Silwani MLA Devendra Patel who recently defected to the Congress after the BJP denied him a ticket.
Congress state vice-president Manak Agarwal resigned from the post on Wednesday night when he found his name missing in the second list of the candidates. Mangilal, a leader from Jabalpur, declared he would contest the election, scheduled on November 25, as an independent candidate.
The ruling party’s scene is no different. Having retained most of the ministers (only two were dropped) as candidates, the BJP leadership is finding it hard to convince the 44 MLAs who have been dropped so far as to why the party denied tickets to them.
