A Congress candidate was on Saturday arrested for staging a dharna without taking permission from the district administration, police said in Jaunpur.
BL Verma, the Congress candidate from newly-constituted Mungra Badshahpur assembly seat, was arrested along with his supporters for staging a dharna at Machlishahr area, they said.
Verma, who was protesting alleged irregularities and corruption at paddy purchase centres, did not take permission from the authorities before launching the sit-in agitation despite the model code of conduct being in place in the state in view of the coming Uttar Pradesh elections, due on February, police said.
